Aim: This study aims to analyze and synthesize existing literature on the modernization of monolithic applications using GitOps-driven microservices orchestration, with the objective of understanding how declarative configuration, automated reconciliation, and version-controlled infrastructure contribute to modernization outcomes.
Methods: The study adopts a structured literature review methodology that integrates technical, organizational, and architectural perspectives. Relevant academic and industry sources are examined to evaluate GitOps principles, implementation strategies, and orchestration practices. The review synthesizes recurring themes, compares differing approaches, and identifies gaps related to tooling, security integration, organizational readiness, and empirical evaluation.
Results: The findings indicate that GitOps-driven modernization offers clear advantages in deployment consistency, scalability, and operational visibility. However, the literature also reveals persistent challenges, including toolchain fragmentation, complexities in security and compliance integration, limited organizational preparedness, and a lack of robust empirical benchmarking. Additionally, significant gaps are identified in financial modeling, human factors, and advanced automation patterns.
Conclusion: The review concludes that while GitOps provides a promising framework for modernizing monolithic applications into microservices architectures, its effectiveness is contingent on organizational maturity, coherent tooling strategies, and comprehensive security integration.
Recommendations: The study recommends that future research focus on developing empirical benchmarks, cost–benefit and financial models, and frameworks that address human and organizational factors. Practitioners and researchers should also explore advanced automation and security patterns to strengthen the practical adoption of GitOps-driven modernization in complex enterprise environments.
